The ancient city of Amantia, a Cultural Monument, warmly welcomes both local and international visitors who come specifically to uncover the architectural artistry of the Illyrian civilization.
The fortification walls of Amantia offer an impressive display of Illyrian engineering and architecture from the 4th century BC.
Constructed with carefully hewn stones, the walls feature polygonal, parallelepiped, and trapezoidal shapes, intricately joined without the use of any binding materials.
The structure rests on meticulously cut rock foundations, providing the fortification with exceptional stability. Some sections of the walls include stone blocks as large as 2.60 meters in length, further strengthening the overall construction.
To enhance the stability of the fortifications, buttresses have been integrated, taking full advantage of the natural terrain and ensuring optimal protection. Several of the acropolis gates feature false arches, a distinctive element of this period.
The Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Vlora, which oversees the preservation of this Cultural Monument, invites visitors to experience Amantia firsthand. This site, a true masterpiece of Illyrian civilization, is still the subject of ongoing archaeological expeditions, with experts continuing to explore and uncover the rich layers of its subterranean history.
