Shkodra and Lezha’s Rich Cultural Heritage Attracts Growing Interest

The Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Shkodra has reported a remarkable increase in the number of visitors to the archaeological sites of Shkodra and Lezha in 2024. Rozafa Castle, one of the city’s main tourist attractions, welcomed 157,827 visitors, a 25.5% rise compared to 2023. With its strategic position and three main courtyards, Rozafa Castle continues to attract both local and international visitors, solidifying its status as one of Albania’s most significant historical sites.

Lezha Castle, located on a hill 186 meters above the city, saw 7,771 visitors in 2024, a 70% increase from the previous year. Originally an Illyrian stronghold, the castle underwent reconstructions by the Venetians in 1440 and the Ottomans in 1522, preserving remnants of Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman architecture, which continue to tell the region’s rich history.

The data provided by the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage highlights a growing interest in the cultural heritage of both Shkodra and Lezha, from visitors near and far. As Rozafa and Lezha Castles gain prominence as important tourist destinations, this reflects a broader trend in the recognition and preservation of Albania’s cultural and historical legacy, contributing to the sustainable development of cultural tourism in the country.
