Public Transport in Albania Now Available on Google Maps
Public transport in Albania has been integrated into Google Maps this year, making it easier for tourists to navigate the country.
Albania has become an increasingly popular tourist destination, offering not only natural beauty but also significant infrastructure improvements. Starting in 2025, it will be easier for visitors to find their way around, as public transport data for intercity routes has been integrated into Google Maps.
Now, travelers can search for routes between cities, and Google Maps will generate the best options automatically. For instance, to travel from Korça to Saranda, there are two primary options. The first involves traveling through Gjirokastra. Passengers take the GJ5 bus from Korça Terminal, reaching Gjirokastër in about three hours. From Gjirokastër, they switch to the GJ3 bus to Saranda, a one-hour journey.
Another option is to travel via Përmet. Passengers first take bus KO32 from Korça to Përmet, then switch to the GJ19 bus to Gjirokastër for about an hour and ten minutes, before continuing to Saranda. Alternatively, there is a direct line from Korça to Saranda with bus KO1, taking 4 hours and 37 minutes.
For Durrës to Tirana, travelers can choose between two routes. One option is via the Tirana-Durrës highway, where passengers take bus DR6 from Durrës Station and then a city bus (line 4) to the city center. Another option goes through Ndroq, where passengers take line TR65 from Plepave Station to Terminal B and then continue on the urban bus.
The data available on Google Maps comes from various sources, including e-Transport (the official intercity transport site), the Municipality of Tirana for city transport, and private companies providing transport data.
This development is especially important given Albania’s rise as a tourist destination. However, the public transport network is still primarily limited to buses, as there are no functional rail services yet. This new feature on Google Maps will certainly make traveling in Albania more convenient for both locals and tourists alike.
